April 2019 – Meeting Minutes & Updates

The 2019 Spring Dance was held on March 23rd at the ICC. Margaret Dalton and Erin’s Melody were great and everyone had a lively night.

Please remember in your prayers, Denis Keaney R.I.P., son of longtime member, Philomena Keaney, who recently passed away.

There are ongoing discussions on donating to the Leitrim Wall Fundraising Drive in the name of the Leitrim Society. If you are also interested, the website is: http://www.leitrimwall.com.

Nominations were held on April 2nd, the following people have been nominated for board positions: President: Derek Mawn, Vice President: Jim Gallagher, Treasurer: Noel Murphy, Public Relations: Mark Fitzpatrick, Sergent at Arms: Phil Bohan, Membership Secretary: Mary McDermott, Recording Secretary: Cathy Mawn, Trustee: Jim Keaney, Trustee: Peggy Bohan, Corresponding Secretary: Nelba Fitzpatrick, and Honorary Chairman: Charlie Mawn.

Members need to renew their membership for 2019 for the Society. Dues remain the same- $20 per family and $10 per individual member.

The general election will take place at the May 7th meeting, with the swearing in of all newly elected board members. There will be appetizers at the meeting after the swearing is held.

The meeting will be held at the Adams Corner Cafe and Butcher Shop, 782 Adams Street, Dorchester, Ma. on Tuesday, May 7th, 2019 at 7:30pm. All are welcome to attend! We’d like to thank the Adams Corner Café for the generous use of the back room for our meetings. They have been gracious hosts and the food is outstanding! You can have an Irish breakfast (with homemade Irish sausage) for dinner!!

The 3rd Annual Leitrim Society mass was held Sunday, March 3rd. There was a great turn out and Fr. Dan Finn celebrated the mass.

The 2019 Spring Dance is March 23rd at the ICC in Canton from 7-11pm. Music will be provided by Margaret Dalton and Erin’s Melody. Please join us for a great evening. Tickets are $15. Donations for the Spring Dance raffle and desserts are greatly appreciated!

Our thoughts and prayers are with Kathleen Gallagher, wife of Frank Gallagher.

Please remember in your prayers, Denis Geoghegan brother of Kathleen Gallagher, who recently passed away in Ireland.

February 2019 – Meeting Minutes & Updates

The meeting was held on February 5th, 2019 at The Adams Corner Café and Butcher Shop at 782 Adams St., Dorchester.

Present – Mary McDermott, Derek Mawn, Noel Murphy, Charlie Mawn, Mark Fitzpatrick, Cathy Mawn, Bridie McDermott, Jim Gallagher and Jim Keaney.

Apologies for omitting the December minutes. The Christmas Dance was a success! Everyone enjoyed themselves!

The Annual Leitrim Society Mass will be held Sunday, March 3rd at 11a.m. at the ICC in Canton. There will be a breakfast buffet following the mass for $12 per person.

A donation was made by the society to the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association, a very worthy cause championed by Cloone man Andy McGovern, the world’s longest survivor of this disease. You can see more details on Andy’s story here.

We are looking into dates for another volunteer event at the Greater Boston Food Bank. Details will be shared at the October meeting.

Margaret Cunningham, sister of Joe Clancy passed away in Ireland recently. We would like to extend our condolences to Joe and Geraldine on the loss of their sister. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

Brendan Charles Gingras R.I.P.

We are very sorry to share the news that Brendan Charles Gingras son of Kathy Mawn and Stepfather Jimmy Mawn passed away tragically in a car accident on Friday, April 20th while traveling in Arizona with friends.

Brendan was only 28. Brendan will be waked on Thursday, April 26th from 4-8 PM at the Kraw-Kornack Funeral Home, 1248 Washington St., Norwood.

The Funeral Mass will take place on Friday at 11 AM at St. Catherine of Siena Church in Norwood. Following the Mass, burial will take place at Mt. Benedict Cemetery.

Obituary Notice from Kraw-Kornack Funeral Home, Norwood, MA.

GINGRAS, Brendan Charles age 28, of Norwood, MA, tragically passed away in a car accident on April 20, 2018 while traveling in Arizona with friends.

Brendan is survived by his loving parents: Kathleen (Maloney) Mawn and stepfather Michael “Jimmy” Mawn of Norwood, and Earl Gingras of Milton. Brother of twin, Daniel Gingras of Norwood, Philip Gingras and his fiancé Katie Basilotto of Plainville; his step-siblings: Michael and wife Karen Mawn of Walpole, Dennis Mawn, Joseph Mawn both of Norwood and Kerin (Mawn) Sullivan and her husband Mark of Wrentham.

Brendan was predeceased by his beloved grandparents, Allen “Pop Pop” and Catherine “Nana” (Murphy) Maloney of Norwood, Richard “Grandpa Dick” and Bjorg “Bestemor” Gingras of Milton. Brendan is also survived by many loving aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

A 2007 graduate of Walpole High School, Brendan worked as a personal assistant to a professional disc golfer. Brendan’s work allowed him to fulfill his love for travel, nature, disc golf, music, and animals, especially dogs.

Upon overcoming his own challenges, Brendan developed a passion for aiding others who battle substance abuse issues, including facilitating access to treatment and a support network. Brendan will be remembered for his big heart and endearing personality.

Funeral from the Kraw-Kornack Funeral Home 1248 Washington St. Norwood, Friday April 27, 2018 at 10am followed by a funeral mass at 11am in St. Catherine of Siena Church Norwood. Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, April 26, 2018 from 4-8pm.

Following the funeral mass burial will be at Mt. Benedict Cemetery, Boston, MA. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Brendan’s memory to the National Institute on Drug Abuse www.drugabuse.gov/about-nida/donating-to-nida or the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals www.mspca.org/donate-now/.
