April 2016 – Meeting Minutes & Updates

The meeting was held on April 12th, 2016 at Blasi’s Café (the Fat Belly Deli) in Adam’s Village, Dorchester, MA.

Present – Derek Mawn, Jim Gallagher, Noel Murphy, Charlie Mawn, Mark & Nelba Fitzpatrick, Connie & Mary McEleney,  Bridie & Mary McDermott, Cathy Mawn, and Julie Keaney

The Spring Dance will be held Saturday April 16th at the Irish Cultural Centre starting at 7:30pm.  Music provided by Noel Henry’s Irish Showband.  Tickets will be available at the door and are $15.  Coffee and tea will be available.  Donations for the raffle are gratefully appreciated.

There will a membership table at the spring dance for anyone who has not renewed their membership for 2016.

There are 5 copies of the Leitrim Guardian available for sale for $20 and we will have the copies at the dance.

The Irish Cultural Centre is sponsoring weekend to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Easter Uprising of 1916 at the Irish Cultural Centre in Canton on April 23rd-24th beginning with a lecture and dinner detailed on the enclosed filer.  The Leitrim Society will be sponsoring the Mass on Sunday at 11am.  There will be events from 12pm thru the evening on Sunday.

Condolences were sent to the families of long time Leitrim Society members Bill Lincoln and T.C. Cummings.

The One Year Anniversary Mass for Cathal Mawn will be held Saturday, April 30th at 4pm at St. Mary’s Church in West Quincy.

Next month’s meeting will be Tuesday May 3rd at our new home, Blasi’s Café (the Fat Belly Deli) across the street from Gerards in Dorchester, at 8pm.

March 2016 – Meeting Minutes & Updates

The meeting was held on March 1st, 2016 at Gerard’s Restaurant in Adam’s Village, Dorchester, MA.

Present – Derek Mawn, Jim Gallagher, Noel Murphy, Charlie Mawn, Mark & Nelba Fitzpatrick, Jim Keaney, Phil & Peggy Bohan, Mary & Bridie McDermott, Cathy Mawn, Maura Weir

The First Annual Mass of Remembrance for deceased members and friends of the Leirtim Socieity on Sunday April 3rd at 11am at the Irish Cultural Centre.  If you are interested in having breakfast with the other members of the Leitrim Society after the mass, please contact Cathy Mawn at 617-549-3230.  The full Irish Breakfast is $12.

We received a thank you note from the family of Sean MacDiarmada and copies will be available at the dance along with photos and local newspaper articles from the unveiling of the plaque.

We are still in contact with several other County Associations in Boston regarding planning a local event to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Easter Uprising of 1916.

Dennis Mawn is running for Selectman in Norwood.  Please get out and vote for Dennis!

February 2016 – Meeting Minutes & Updates

The meeting was held on February 2nd, 2016 at Gerard’s Restaurant in Adam’s Village, Dorchester, MA.

The Christmas Dance was a great success this year with many compliments received…and a small profit was made.

There was a Thank you note received from First Descents for our donation made in remembrance of Kristen Mawn.

The Spring Dance will be held Saturday April 16th at the Irish Cultural Centre starting at 7:30pm.  Music provided by Noel Henry’s Irish Showband.

The Irish Hearts Dance for Haiti is Sunday April 10th at the Quincy Marriott.  We have sponsored an Ad similar to previous years.

There will be a Mass of Remembrance for deceased members on Sunday April 3rd at 11am at the Irish Cultural Centre.

The Plaque for Sean MacDiarmada was unveiled on Sunday February 7th in Kiltyclogher.  There is an article in the Leitrim Observer written by Derek Mawn and the link is available on the website and Facebook page.

We are still in contact with several other County Associations in Boston regarding planning a local event to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Easter Uprising of 1916.

Movie Screening at The Burren – December 20th

“The Godfather – Brendan Gleeson Meets Brian Rooney”

The Burren bar in Somerville will be screening the fantastic TG4 documentary on the life of Leitrim fiddle player, Brian Rooney. Brian hails from Derragoon, near Kiltyclogher, North County Letrim.

The documentary takes us on a journey through his life, music and how he has overcome illness. He is accompanied on this journey by the actor and fiddle player Brendan Gleeson, who has starred in such movies as Braveheart, The gangs of New York and Harry Potter.

The screening will happen Sunday Dec 20th at 8pm and admission will be free.

“Brian played the Burren about 12 years ago. We had a great night and a lot of support from the Leitrim Society. Hope we can repeat it. It’s a lovely story about Brian and some lovely clips of his home place.”

If you’re done with your Christmas shopping and need to wind down, please drop into The Burren, 247 Elm St., Davis Square, Somerville to celebrate this fine Leitrim man!

The Christmas Party will be held on Sunday December 13th from 4-8 PM at the Irish Cultural Center (200 New Boston Dr., Canton). Tickets are $25 per person for Adults and children eat for free. Please call for tickets to Cathy Mawn at 617-549-3230.

Tickets must be ordered by Sunday December 6th.

There will be Music and a visit from Santa! The ICC has plenty of parking including down around the back of the building. The Function will be held on the Upper floor and there is an elevator on the Ground floor for the convenience of members.

Maura Weir has some Commemorative Centenary Calendars for the Sean Mac Diarmada Committee that will be on sale at the Christmas Party. The calendars are $10 each. They would make a great Christmas gift!

2016 Membership applications are included in the mailing this month. There will also be a Membership Table at the Christmas Party. Renewal remains $10 per person or $20 per family. You can also download your membership form here to fill up and bring to the party with your payment.

Tommy McCarthy at the Burren Pub in Somerville will be holding a free screening of a documentary on Bryan “The Godfather” Rooney, a Leitrim born fiddle player – originally from Derragoon near Kiltyclogher. This free screening will be held on Sunday December 20th at 8PM. It would be great to see a lot of Leitrim support!

Derek Mawn, Theresa Mawn Wilson and Maura Weir are looking into meeting with other clubs in order to plan a Boston Memorial of the Centenary of the 1916 Easter Rising.

The 7th Annual Irish Hearts for Orphans Event will be held next spring on Sunday April 10th, 2016. Mark your Calendars for this worthy cause. More details to follow.

There is no meeting for January so the next meeting will be on Tuesday February 2, 2016. Gerard’s, our usual venue for meetings, will be closing, so I will send a notice out when we have secured a new place. Have a Happy and safe New Year and Best Wishes for 2016!

November 2015 – Meeting Minutes & Updates

The meeting was held on November 3rd, 2015 at Gerard’s Restaurant in Adam’s Village, Dorchester, MA.

This year’s Christmas Party will be held on Sunday, December 13th from 4-8PM at the ICC in Canton. Tickets must be ordered in advance. (Click Here for more information) Donations for the raffle are welcome.

There was a report of the Golden Bridge’s Roundtable given by Derek Mawn. Derek and Amanda Mawn represented the Leitrim Society, with Derek participating on a panel of local Irish charities, clubs, and interest groups.

The Foxwoods Trip has been scheduled for Wednesday, January 13th 2016. Details will follow. There will be a sign-up sheet at the Christmas Party. Be sure to tell your family and friends!

Jimmy’s Hall, an Irish film that takes place in County Leitrim, has been released on DVD in case you missed its theatrical release.

A Memorial Mass for our past members and loved ones will be held on Sunday, April 3rd 2016 at 11AM. More details to follow.

Connie McEleney suggested the possibility of an Easter Uprising Commemoration here in Boston to honor the Centenerary. Derek will contact other country groups regarding the possibility of organizing something, however if you have any ideas, please feel free to share. Easter this year takes place on March 27th 2016.

The next meeting will be held December 1st at 8PM at Gerard’s Restaurant in Adam’s Corner, Dorchester. We hope to see you there!

It's Christmas time!

October 2015 – Meeting Minutes & Updates

The meeting was held on October 6th, 2015 at Gerard’s Restaurant in Adam’s Village, Dorchester, MA.

Present – Derek Mawn, Connie & Mary McEleney, Jim Gallagher, Mary McDermott, Bridie McDermott, Mark & Nelba Fitzpatrick, Jim Keaney, Charlie Mawn, Noel Murphy, Phil Bohan, Jack& Marie Maguire, Maura Weir, Amanda Mawn, Mary McNulty, Cathy Mawn.

The Christmas Party will be held on Sunday, December 13th from 4-8 PM at the ICC in Canton. Music will be provided by Kathy & the Irish Americans.

There will be a Fundraiser held on October 16th for First Descents at the Elks Lodge in Weymouth at 7 PM. Frank Mawn, son of Charlie and Anna Mae, is running this in memory of his wife, Kristen. There will be a Silent Auction, Raffle, Music, Dancing, Drinks and Light Apps. Tickets and Info may be obtained from Theresa Mawn Wilson at 617-302-2799. First Descents is a Charity that raises funds for young adult cancer victims.

A Donation was made to First Descents by the Leitrim Society of Boston.

Phil Bohan is checking into the availability of the Leitrim Guardians for the Christmas Party.

Derek is looking into the Kiltyclogher Centenary Celebration remembering Sean MacDiarmada. Seamus Shanley has reached out to see if there is an interest in the Leitrim Society donating to a Memorial Plaque in Kiltyclogher, which will be unveiled in May 2016.
