The Burren bar in Somerville will be screening the fantastic TG4 documentary on the life of Leitrim fiddle player, Brian Rooney. Brian hails from Derragoon, near Kiltyclogher, North County Letrim.

The documentary takes us on a journey through his life, music and how he has overcome illness. He is accompanied on this journey by the actor and fiddle player Brendan Gleeson, who has starred in such movies as Braveheart, The gangs of New York and Harry Potter.

The screening will happen Sunday Dec 20th at 8pm and admission will be free.

“Brian played the Burren about 12 years ago. We had a great night and a lot of support from the Leitrim Society. Hope we can repeat it. It’s a lovely story about Brian and some lovely clips of his home place.”

If you’re done with your Christmas shopping and need to wind down, please drop into The Burren, 247 Elm St., Davis Square, Somerville to celebrate this fine Leitrim man!

LSB help out at the Greater Boston Food Bank

On Saturday, April 26th, our LSB team joined forces with the BeantoIMG_1662wn Cats (University of Arizona Alumni Boston) for a very rewarding afternoon at the Greater Boston Food Bank.

The food bank is a top class facility opened in 2009 with the aid of generouIMG_1663s city based sponsors. Upon arrival at the warehouse, we had a briefing on the activities and services provided by the food bank, followed by a guide on procedures for our assigned tasks of the afternoon on inspecting, sorting, and packing food and grocery products.

Our role as a group, was to inspect frozen food supplies (donated by various corporations such as Stop and Shop and other grocery stores), sort by food type – beef, pork, poultry etc. and package into boxes of 35lb approx., ready for distribution to worthy causes in the Greater Boston area.IMG_1666

The pallets of frozen food kept coming but we kept knocking them down until our shift was over! At the end of the day we sorted through, and packaged:
* 6405lbs of food, 98% of which was salvageable
* which provided for 5230 meals
* averaging 402 meals per volunteer!

We had a great time today and are eager to volunteer again for this wonderful cause.

We’d love to sign up more members and friends of the Leitrim Society of Boston for our next trip to help the troopers at the food bank, stay tuned…!

LSB Volunteer day at the Greater Boston Food Bank

Volunteers play a critical role in ending hunger by giving their time and talent to support The Greater Boston Food Bank. Last year, more than 25,000 volunteers worked a total of 62,000 hours, a contribution worth more than $1,000,000.

The Leitrim Society of Boston have organized a day to help out at the food bank on Saturday April 26th, 2014 from 1.00 p.m. to 3.30 p.m. Places are extremely limited so if you are interested in registering your participation please contact Mary McDermott (marypmcdermott@hotmail.com) ASAP.

Volunteers work in our warehouse, inspecting, sorting, and repacking donated food and grocery products.

Upon arrival, the team will orient you to The Greater Boston Food Bank and its services, and then you will be trained for your project. At the end of the shift, we can gather everyone back together to discuss impact, answer questions and take a group photo.

Some volunteers load boxes onto conveyer belts, some inspect or sort products, and others check and label boxes. While a few of these tasks require the ability to lift a 30 pound box, most tasks require only that a volunteer stand and inspect products for a few hours. Please remember to wear closed-toed shoes for your shift (no sandals or flip flops).

Your assistance is a crucial part of helping to End Hunger Here!
