November 2015 – Meeting Minutes & Updates

The meeting was held on November 3rd, 2015 at Gerard’s Restaurant in Adam’s Village, Dorchester, MA.

This year’s Christmas Party will be held on Sunday, December 13th from 4-8PM at the ICC in Canton. Tickets must be ordered in advance. (Click Here for more information) Donations for the raffle are welcome.

There was a report of the Golden Bridge’s Roundtable given by Derek Mawn. Derek and Amanda Mawn represented the Leitrim Society, with Derek participating on a panel of local Irish charities, clubs, and interest groups.

The Foxwoods Trip has been scheduled for Wednesday, January 13th 2016. Details will follow. There will be a sign-up sheet at the Christmas Party. Be sure to tell your family and friends!

Jimmy’s Hall, an Irish film that takes place in County Leitrim, has been released on DVD in case you missed its theatrical release.

A Memorial Mass for our past members and loved ones will be held on Sunday, April 3rd 2016 at 11AM. More details to follow.

Connie McEleney suggested the possibility of an Easter Uprising Commemoration here in Boston to honor the Centenerary. Derek will contact other country groups regarding the possibility of organizing something, however if you have any ideas, please feel free to share. Easter this year takes place on March 27th 2016.

The next meeting will be held December 1st at 8PM at Gerard’s Restaurant in Adam’s Corner, Dorchester. We hope to see you there!

October 2015 – Meeting Minutes & Updates

The meeting was held on October 6th, 2015 at Gerard’s Restaurant in Adam’s Village, Dorchester, MA.

The Christmas Party will be held on Sunday, December 13th from 4-8 PM at the ICC in Canton. Music will be provided by Kathy & the Irish Americans.

There will be a Fundraiser held on October 16th for First Descents at the Elks Lodge in Weymouth at 7 PM. Frank Mawn, son of Charlie and Anna Mae, is running this in memory of his wife, Kristen. There will be a Silent Auction, Raffle, Music, Dancing, Drinks and Light Apps. Tickets and Info may be obtained from Theresa Mawn Wilson at 617-302-2799. First Descents is a Charity that raises funds for young adult cancer victims.

A Donation was made to First Descents by the Leitrim Society of Boston.

Phil Bohan is checking into the availability of the Leitrim Guardians for the Christmas Party.

Derek is looking into the Kiltyclogher Centenary Celebration remembering Sean MacDiarmada. Seamus Shanley has reached out to see if there is an interest in the Leitrim Society donating to a Memorial Plaque in Kiltyclogher, which will be unveiled in May 2016.

September 2015 – Meeting Minutes & Updates

Welcome back to all…hope you had a good summer.

The Christmas Dance is planned for December 13, 2015 from 4-8PM. It will be held at the Irish Cultural Center in Canton.

Mark Fitzpatrick renewed the domain name for the Leitrim Society in order to keep us connected online.

In regards to the proposed trip to Foxwoods, we will be calling our list to check if people would be more interested in going to Plainville for the slots as it is closer than Foxwoods.

Seamus Shanley has contacted the Society regarding the Sean McDiarmada celebration.  We are reaching out to get more information about the event and the fundraising needs.

June 2015 – Meeting Minutes & Updates

The meeting was held on June 2nd, 2015 at Gerard’s Restaurant in Adam’s Village, Dorchester, MA.

Present – Derek Mawn, Connie & Mary McEleney, Frank Gallagher, Jack & Marie Maguire, Mark & Nelba Fitzpatrick, Phil Bohan, Mary McDermott, Maura Weir, Theresa Mawn Wilson, Noel Murphy, Jim Gallagher, Bridie McDermott, Amanda Mawn, Cathy Mawn.

There was a Moment of Silence in Remembrance of Cathal Mawn. Flowers and a Mass Card were sent to Cathal’s wake.

The May Meeting was cancelled due to Cathal’s passing.

The April Dance was a great success and we had a very lively crowd.

The Christmas Dance has been booked for December 13, 2015 at the Irish Cultural Center, Canton from 4-8PM.

We are hoping to re-schedule the trip to Foxwoods for October. We have the signup list from the Dance. Anyone else interested may call 617-549-3230.

Maura Weir spoke regarding the Pieta House, founded for Suicide prevention, which was first formed in Ireland. They are opening an outpatient facility in NYC.

Jim Gallagher is looking into perhaps having an annual Mass in remembrance of deceased members. It is being done by some of the other clubs at the ICC.

Theresa Mawn Wilson has volunteered into searching out options for a Play Picnic for small children of members as a get-together.

The next Meeting will be held September 8, 2015 at Gerard’s Restaurant in Adams Corner, Dorchester. Everyone is very welcome to attend.

 

June Meeting

This is a reminder that the June Meeting is being held tonight at 8 PM at Gerard’s Restaurant in Dorchester.

There will be Installation of Officers and the final meeting before the summer break. There will be appetizers/light refreshments for all present.

All are invited and welcome to attend.

April 2015 – Meeting Minutes & Updates

The meeting was held on April 7th, 2015 at Gerard’s Restaurant in Adam’s Village, Dorchester, MA.

PRESENT – Derek Mawn, Noel Murphy, Frank Gallagher, Jim Gallagher, Cathal Mawn, Charlie Mawn, Phil Bohan, Nelba & Mark Fitzpatrick, Mary McDermott, Cathy Mawn.

The Annual Spring Dance will be held on April 11th, 2015 from 7 to 11 PM. The dance is to be held at the Irish Cultural Center, 200 New Boston St., Canton.  If people need to be dropped off at the door, please use the access road located to the left before the cottage as you enter the main gates.  There will be sign indicating where to turn on the night of the dance.

LSB Trip to Foxwoods Resort Casino – there will be a signup sheet at the dance for anyone interested in a weekday (Wednesday) trip to Foxwoods, or you may submit your interest here.  The trip will be in late May.

2015 membership sign up will also be available at the dance for anyone who has not renewed. You can also fill out the form here and bring to the dance.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Roseleen Weir, who was in a serious car accident and is recuperating at Golden Living 188 Florence Street, Chestnut Hill MA 02467 if anyone would like to send along kind words of encouragement for a full and speedy recovery.

March 2015 – Meeting Minutes & Updates

The meeting was held on March 10th, 2015 at Gerard’s Restaurant in Adam’s Village, Dorchester, MA.

PRESENT – Derek Mawn, Noel Murphy, Jim Keaney, Jim Gallagher, Cathal Mawn, Charlie Mawn, Nelba & Mark Fitzpatrick, Mary McDermott, Bridie McDermott, Cathy Mawn.

The Christmas Dance was a great success. There were may compliments to both the food and venue. Many thanks are extended to our visitors from New York and congratulations again to Frank Brady on being the Leitrim Guardian Man of the Year.

There was no meeting in January per usual.

Hopefully our long and snowy winter is coming to an end soon. There was no meeting in February due to the severe weather. The March meeting was delayed one week also due to weather.

Note that nominations are not closed until the night of the elections so there is still time for people to get involved.

There was a motion made to extend the terms of office to four years instead of two, passed by a show of hands.

Voting for Officers will take place at the April meeting, which will be held on April 7th at Gerard’s in Dorchester.

There have been issues with the Leitrim Society telephone that we hope to resolve in the next week.  In the meantime please contact Cathy Mawn at 617-549-3230 with any urgent questions or concerns.

We are planning a trip to Foxwoods in May, there will be a sign up sheet at the Spring Dance for those who are interested.

The Society was contacted by Rory Flynn Sr. to inform us that the first Irish Boston Police Officer was from Leitrim.  Barney McGinniskin was in the Boston Police from 1851 to 1854 and was from Sranagross, Glenfarne.  An award is given in his name every year within the Boston Police Department.  He is buried in St. Augustine Cemetery in South Boston.

Monthly Meeting Postponed

Due to the weather, travel and parking conditions that the recent snow storms have left behind, tonight’s monthly LSB meeting is postponed until next week. The meeting will be held on February 10th, 2015 at 8 PM at Gerard’s Restaurant in Adams Village, Dorchester.

December 2014 – Meeting Minutes & Updates

The meeting was held on December 2nd, 2014 at Gerard’s Restaurant in Adam’s Village, Dorchester, MA.

PRESENT – Derek Mawn, Mary McDermott, Noel Murphy, Frank Gallagher, Jim Gallagher, Charlie Mawn, Connie & Mary McEleney, Tommy Byrne, Bridie McDermott, Phil Bohan, Maura Weir and Cathy Mawn

It is very sad to have to announce the Death of John “Jack” Lavalle, husband of Maura (McHugh)  Lavalle. The long time member died unexpectedly on November 21st.  Condolences go out to Maura and her family, RIP Jack.

The Christmas Party is December 14th from 4 to 8 PM at Sons of Italy (Upstairs at the Golden Lion Suite) 120 Quarry St., Quincy, MA. Tickets are $25 pp. and children eat free. Tickets must be purchased in advance- There are NO tickets sold at the door! Tickets may be ordered by calling Cathy Mawn at 617-696-1583 or 617-549-3230 and leaving a message. Kathy and the Irish Americans will be providing the entertainment. Please call to order your tickets by December 5th as we have to have a count for the caterer. Any donations for the in-house raffle at the dance would be gratefully appreciated.

Phil Bohan is trying to arrange to have some new Leitrim Guardian Magazines for sale at the dance. Frank Brady of Manorhamilton was the Guardian’s “Man of the Year.”

Membership for 2015 can be renewed at the Dance. Dues remain $10 pp or $20 per household. You can get the current membership form here – fill it out and give to any of the LSB committee members at the dance or mail it in if you prefer.

The New York Leitrim Society is running a weekend to the Catskills in June, 2015. Jim Gallagher will be providing further information if people would be interested in meeting some old neighbors and new friends from home!

Nominations the LSB Board will take place at the March 6, 2015 meeting.  You must attend in person to nominate and be nominated.

Glenfarne, Co. Leitrim won the top prize in the 2014 Pride of Place Award! The judges were especially impressed with the renovation of the Ballroom of Romance. Up Leitrim!

There will be no meeting per usual for January. The next meeting is February 3, 2015 at 8 PM at Gerard’s Restaurant in Adams Village, Dorchester. ALL ARE WECOME and encouraged to attend.

We are still working out the details of a Trip to Foxwoods in early 2015 and another volunteer opportunity at the Greater Boston Food Bank.
