We’re back in action…

Greetings One and All,

Unfortunately our summer is over, but on the bright side, our Leitrim Society activities resume!

We will be having the first meeting of the season on Tuesday September 12, 2017 at 7.30pm. The meeting will be held at the Adams Corner Cafe and Butcher Shop, in the back room.

The cafe is located at 782 Adams St., Dorchester. It is on the opposite side of the street to the Eire Pub near the Greenhills Bakery.

The cafe does serve food for those interested.

Patrick Murphy, R.I.P.

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the sudden passing of Manorhamilton native Patrick Murphy, a friend and member of the Leitrim Society of Boston since our inception over 20 years ago.

The always smiling Patrick and his family attended many of our events over the years, please keep them in your thoughts and prayers at this time.

Obituary Notice from Alfred D. Thomas Funeral Home, Milton.

Patrick K. Murphy, age 53 of Quincy passed away suddenly August 7th at home. Born and raised in County Leitrim, Ireland, Patrick came to the United States in his early 20’s. He has lived in Quincy for many years and was a devoted father who enjoyed spending time with his children, walking, and swimming.

Patrick had a large circle of friends and was loved by everyone who knew him. Beloved husband of Mary H. (Manning). Father of Isabel, Aidan and Abigail Murphy all of Quincy. Brother of Seamus Murphy and his wife Maeve Costello of Donegal, Ireland, Michael Murphy and his wife Ann of Leitrim, Ireland, Deirdre O’Boyle and her husband Russell of Quincy and Noel Murphy and his wife Marie of Braintree. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and his four legged friends-Lily and Duke.

Funeral mass at St. Agatha Church, Milton Monday at 12 noon.
Visiting hours at the Alfred D. Thomas Funeral Home 326 Granite Ave Milton Sunday from 2-6 pm.
Burial Pine Hill Cemetery, Quincy.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Patrick’s memory to the Murphy Children’s Education Funds, c/o Edward Manning, 19 Ryan Dr. Norwood, MA 02062.

This morning, Thursday April 6th, a long-time member of the Leitrim Society, Peter Kenny, formerly of Glenfarne, passed away. Please keep the members of his family in your thoughts and prayers at this time. Peter will be sadly missed.

Peter Brendan Kenny, of Dorchester, died April 6, 2017 peacefully at home.

Beloved husband of 57 years Maureen (Faherty) Kenny of Dorchester. Loving father of Margie Ryan of Dorchester and her late husband Paul, Bernadette Kenny and her wife Lori Casinghino of Milton, Robyn Londergan of Quincy, Catherine Kenny of Braintree and her late husband Brendan P. McGrath, Mary (Mamie) Kenny and Antonio Maycott of Cambridge, Julie Foley and her husband Mark of Quincy and the late Michael B. Kenny.  Devoted brother of Sr. Inez Kenny and Donal Kenny both of Sligo Ireland, Frank Kenny of Georgia and the late Eileen Paulsen, Hugh Kenny and Terence Kenny. Cherished grandfather of Courtney and Joseph Dion, Maggie, Julie, Patrick, and Sammi Ryan, Michael, Richard, and John Londergan, Liam and Hugh McGrath, Julia McQuaid and Shannon Foley. Devoted Great Grandfather of Peter, Luke, and Maggie Dion. Peter is also lovingly survived by many nieces, nephews and close friends who will miss him dearly.

Peter was born and raised in his beloved Glenfarne, County Leitrim, Ireland. He first came to the United States in 1954 and served in the Unites States Navy as a proud member of the Seabees battalion. He was a member of the McKeon Post in Dorchester, Leitrim Society of Boston, Knights of Columbus, and the Irish Social Club. Peter loved his family who were the cornerstone of his entire life. He will be dearly missed by them and all who had the pleasure to have known him.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours on Sunday 2-6 PM at Dolan Funeral Home, 1140 Washington Street, DORCHESTER LOWER MILLS. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Saint Gregory Church, Dorchester Avenue, Dorchester, Monday April 10 at 10:00 AM. Interment in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Dorchester.

April 2017 – Meeting Minutes & Updates

The Spring Dance will be held Saturday, April 8, 2017 from 7-11pm at the Irish Cultural Centre in Canton.  Erin’s Melody will perform and tickets are $15 per person.  Coffee, Tea, and desserts will be provided.  Donations for the raffle at the Spring Dance are greatly appreciated.

There are some copies of the Leitrim Guardian available to purchase.  They can be purchased for $20.00.  Please contact Cathy Mawn at 617-549-3230 if you would like to purchase a copy. It can be mailed to you, or delivered locally.

Irish Hearts for Orphans Annual Dance will be held on April 9th from 4-8pm at the Quincy Marriott.  There will be Irish step-dancing, traditional music, Erin’s Melody and Noel Henry’s Irish Show band.  There will be a silent auction and the Grand Prize Raffle is a Gertrude Byrne’s Irish Cruise for 2!  Please support this worthy cause.

We are looking into dates in the Fall 2017 for another volunteer event at the Greater Boston Food Bank.

It is time to renew membership for 2017 for the Society. Dues remain the same with $20 per family and $10 per individual member. There will be a membership table at the Spring Dance to renew membership for 2017.

There is a member from the Somerville area who would be interested in attending our Monthly meetings.  If anyone is available to give her a lift to the meetings, please contact Cathy Mawn at 617-549-3230 for further information.

The Spring Dance is booked for April 8th, 2017 from 7PM to 11PM, at the Irish Cultural Center in Canton. Erin’s Melody will perform and tickets are $15 per person.  Tea, coffee and desserts will be provided.  Please put the date in your calendar!  Donations for the raffle at the Spring Dance are greatly appreciated.

The Mass of Remembrance has been re-scheduled for March 19th at 11am at the ICC in Canton.  A full Irish breakfast is available following the Mass and is $12 per person.  We would love to have all members join us.

Comedian Jimmy Tingle and Irish Tenor Ciaran Nagle will be performing at the ICC at 1:30pm  after the mass.  Tickets are $20.  Call 1-781-821-8291.

The Irish Music Club of Greater Boston is having their dance at the Viking Club, 410 Quincy Ave., Braintree on April 1st.  There will be a special Mass held at the club prior to the dance. Mass starts at 6:30 PM.

The next meeting will be held at the Adams Corner Café and Butcher Shop, 782 Adams Street Dorchester MA on Tuesday, April 4, 2017 at 7:30PM. Meeting start times have been moved up 30 minutes as the restaurant is closing at 9 PM.

December 2016 – Meeting Minutes & Updates

The meeting was held on December 6th, 2016 at The Adams Corner Café and Butcher Shop at 782 Adams St., Dorchester.

We have ordered the plaque in recognition of Tom Concannon’s generosity for donating the raffle barrel. It will be attached to the barrel as a tribute.

The annual Christmas party was a success!  There was a lovely meal of turkey and salmon  with Chicken fingers for the children. Santa paid a surprise visit as well!

We are looking into dates in the spring 2017 for another volunteer event at the Greater Boston Food Bank.

The Spring Dance will be held Saturday, April 8, 2017 at the Irish Cultural Centre from 7-11pm.

Condolences to Vincent Donohoe on the passing of his devoted longtime partner, Sandra S. Bardwell.

The Society will be having a Mass at the ICC in memory of all past members. The 2nd Annual Memorial Mass will be at 11 AM, Sunday, January 8th, 2017.

It is time to renew membership for 2017  for the Society. Dues remain the same with $20 per family and $10 per individual member. There is a renewal/application form enclosed with the minutes.
